Information
Since its original release in June of 1978, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds has grown to become a classic, winning a new generation of devoted followers while still providing inspiration for faithful listeners from the past decades. Inspired by the HG Wells novel, the album features a compelling blend of progressive rock, classical, and literary influences, coupled with narration from Richard Burton and outstanding performances by some of the biggest artists of the 70s, including David Essex, Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) and Julie Covington.
The album has enjoyed huge success and critical acclaim across the globe with over 12.5 million records sold. The War Of The Worlds initially spent over 260 consecutive weeks in the UK albums charts alone and has reappeared consistently through the years.

Review: Metal-Observer (8.5/10)
“Keeper Pt.1″ was the first HELLOWEEN-album with Michael Kiske on the vocal helm. With the previous two releases (a self-titled EP in 1985 and “Walls of Jericho” in 1986), the band showed to have already found a quite distinctive style (especially with the latter), but it’s on this album that their songwriting appears to be progressed and matured.
Basically, the HELLOWEEN-recipe is very simple: they took the sound of early MAIDEN, added more speed, tons of melody and sugary choruses, and there it is. No wonder in the 80’s there were a lot of Metalheads complaining about the band as an IRON MAIDEN-clone. But make no mistake: for sure HELLOWEEN started out with plain MAIDEN-influences, but they created their own sound out of that.
On this record, all the tracks are notable, apart from the first and the last, respectively the intro and the outro, which are pretty forgettable. The opening riff of “I’m Alive” is indeed a strong way to kick in the whole album, and the rest of it keep going on the same level, here we have no filler tracks neither uninspired moments at all. In particular, “Future World” and “Twilight Of The Gods” can be counted among the best songs the band have ever written, and have become crowd favourites at live-shows. The ballad is represented by “A Tale That Wasn’t Right”, and it appears to be quite ordinary, but the amazing vocal performance by Kiske and a great guitar solo by Weikath fully make up for it. “Halloween” is the long epic track of the album (clocking in at over 13 minutes), and is masterly varied to keep the listener interested, although I have to say it’s maybe a bit redundant. By the way, it’s a very solid song.
The guitarwork on this one is brilliant, plenty of melodic solos, dual harmony guitar parts (again in the vein of MAIDEN), and a good amount of guitar licks. Moreover, every guitar line is well composed and executed, the two guitarists showing all of their wares throughout the album. As I already mentioned, maybe we can notice a lack of originality in that department (and in the whole record as well), but it’s just my opinion and, that aside, the guitarwork is flawless and totally enjoyable.
The vocals are excellent. The most evident weak spot on the previous works of the band was for sure the singin’, so I’m glad to say they fully recovered that aspect. Michael Kiske is the singer every band would kill to have on board. He can sing very very high, without losing power in his voice, and still properly executing every single note. The problem I find with the majority of Power Metal-(so called) vocalists lies in their incompetence to keep accuracy on the high notes, when required. By no means hitting a note equals the right execution of it, and when this doesn’t happen the result is to go unduly shrill and piss off the listener. But sorry, I digress. Anyway, that’s not the case here, Kiske being a hell of a singer (he ranks high in my own top-ten list of best Metal-vocalists of the 80’s). The one and only complaint I can find about his voice it’s a slight resemblance with the Air Raid Siren, namely Bruce ~censored~ (what the heck, again the MAIDEN-comparison!), but for most singers this is a compliment instead of a criticism.
The rhythmic section is also very good, although I have to say Ingo’s style doesn’t reach my senses, but this time, the fault lies in the listener. On the other hand, Markus Grosskopf is a pretty competent bassplayer, skilled and technical.
The production by Tommy Hansen, who kept working with the band until recent times, is average. We’re talking about what could be a standard-quality production back in 1987, so today this sounds pretty aged and a tad thin. Well, I realize maybe I’m splitting hairs now, by the way don’t expect a bombastic production. Only another personal thing: I dislike the drums on this one. They sounds really bad, in my opinion.
Bottom line: an excellent release in itself and certainly the most influential album (along with its follow-up) for nowadays Power Metal-bands. Highly recommended.
